Applying for the master's degree program Economics and Management Science (MEMS)

Please note: There will be no admissions for the MEMS program for the winter semester 2025/26!!!

When applying for the master's degree programme in Economics or Business Administration, the following admission requirements must be cumulatively fulfilled, and proof must be provided before the application deadline:

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Economics or in a related subject

Professional qualification from a university degree program with a share of no less than 120 ECTS credits in the subjects of economics, social and political sciences or related subjects such as law, mathematics or statistics.

If the degree is still unfinished at the time of application, it must be proven that, based on the course of studies to date, in particular previous examination results, it can be expected that the Bachelor's degree will be obtained before the Master's program begins.
 
English language skills

Proof of English language skills to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Please consult the subject-specific entry and admission regulations for the master's degree program Economics and Management Science to find out the minimum achievements required to demonstrate the requisite language skills.

Time limits on the validity of language tests (e.g. TOEFL / IELTS: two years) are not taken into account.
 
German language skills

German language skills are not required.

If you can prove that you meet these admission requirements and have submitted all the documents required in the application form by the deadline and in the prescribed form, you will be admitted to the selection procedure. All documents can be submitted in German or English.

Selection criteria

On the basis of § 5 Paragraph 1 Sentence 1 ZSP-HU, places in this program of study are allocated exclusively according to the following selection criteria. A hardship quota or waiting period quota is not applied.
 

Selection criterion 1: Final Grade

Selection criterion I is the degree of qualification of the previous studies (final grade).

The Degree Certificate and Transcripts of Records should be submitted in either Englisch or German and issued by your previous university. If the documents are not available in German or English, please enclose an officially certified translation of the originals with your application.

For the application purposes, the upload of a scanned version is sufficient. Should you get acceptance to the MEMS program, you should bring the original documents to the enrollment office for verification. Please do not send the originals via post.

If your Degree Certificate is not yet available at the time of application, please submit a current Transcript of Records. It should be clear from the course of studies to date, in particular from the previous examination results, that the degree will be awarded before the Master's program begins.
 
Selection criterion 2: Test result of the GRE


Certificate of the GRE test result (Graduate Record Exam).

Selection Criterion 3: Quantitative specialization in the preceding studies

A quantitative specialization in the preceding studies in mathematics, probability theory, statictics, econometrics, computer science, operations research, physics or comparable subjects can have a rank enhancing effect.

A complete Transcript of Records (performance overview) of the previous university must be submitted, showing the corresponding subjects/modules, their grading and the weight (credits) with which the performance is included in the overall grade/ final grade (in English or German).

If possible, an overview of the university should be enclosed, showing how the achieved performance is to be classified in comparison to the reference group (frequency distribution) and to which scope of performance the weight to be applied corresponds.
 
Selection Criterion 4: Two Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation must be submitted. These will be written by the professors of the previous university. Only for exceptional cases, we may Letters of recommendation from employers.

After registering in the online system and completing the relevant sections, you will receive a special form, via Email, that should be passed on to your recommenders.

Letters of recommendation must be sent directly by the professors to the MEMS office. They are confidential and the applicant is not allowed to read them. If the professors send them via Email, the are prompted to use their official university e-mail address. If they send the letters via post, they should use a signed and sealed envelope.

The applicant must ensure that the letters of recommendation are submitted on time. In the application portal it can be seen whether the letters of recommendation have been received.
 
Selection Criterion 5: Motivation letter and curriculum vitae

In a letter of motivation (in English or German) the intention and the specific reasons for the interest in the Master's program in Economics and Management Science must be made clear. The letter of motivation must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae.
