Humboldt Universität zu Berlin has been an active member of the Erasmus European mobility programmes since 1991. Erasmus is both the most ambitious and the most famous academic exchange programme in Europe.
Within the framework of the renewed Erasmus programme 2021-27, students of our faculty are entitled to participate in an exchange semester at one of 60 partner institutions across Europe. There are more than 160 places available to the students of our faculty alone.
Participants of the Erasmus programme receive a stipend based on monthly allowances. The number of scholarships depends on the overall amount of money available every year in the so-called “Erasmus funding pot”. In addition, the participants are exempted from paying any tuition fees at their host institution (although they may be asked to cover the costs of the “Semesterticket” or similar scheme).
If you have received a placement at an Erasmus destination, you do not need to apply for an Erasmus grant separately; the international office will take care of it for you. However, you do need to submit your Erasmus Grant Agreement in time (June); otherwise, we will not be able to process your scholarship. Not least, you are bound to meet the administrative formalities on time and achieve at least 24 ECTS credits during your exchange semester or else you will be forced to reimburse the stipend.
The amount of money you will receive depends on the country wher you will be spending your exchange semester. Destination countries are sorted by monthly allowance into the following three groups:
- Group 1 with 600 EUR per month: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden
- Group 2 with 540 EUR per month: Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Cyprus, Czech Republic
- Group 3 with 540 EUR per month: Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey.
(The monthly allowance for Group 2 and 3 is identical)
In principle, a semester abroad is funded for 4.5 months. In the case of trimesters, a total of 3 months is funded. However, the settlement will be made on a day-by-day basis according to the date of arrival and departure on the Confirmation of Registration or the Confirmation of Stay.
The Erasmus stipend will grant you financial aid as listed below:
- 1 term: 3 months
- 1 Semester: 4,5 months
- 2 terms: 5,5 months
- 3 terms or 2 semesters: 8,5 months
The funding period is still subject to the final calculation.
You can also apply for additional Erasmus funding if you plan to do an internship in one of the Erasmus destinations. The total amount also depends on which group your destination country belongs to. You will find detailed information and instructions about the application process HERE.
The terms of the exit agreement of the 31st of January 31 2020 stipulated that the United Kingdom would still participate in the Erasmus+ programme generation (2014-2020) until 2020. The current partnership agreement will not be extended to the new Erasmus+ programme generation (2021-2027).
Applications are still handled at the faculty level even though applicants are not entitled to the Erasmus scholarship any longer.
Further information can be found at the following page.
You will receive a mobility grant via your host institution in Switzerland. The application timeline and process for Switzerland are the same as the Erasmus+ programme´s ones. Please address your questions about the modalities of funding to the Incomings team at the host institution.
You will find further details about the Swiss Mobility programme HERE.
